Chemical burns of the eye : causes and management STEPHEN
نویسنده
چکیده
Chemical injuries of the eye form a small but significant fraction of ocular trauma. Three recent studies'-3 put the incidence at 7, 8-7, and 9-9% of all ocular trauma, respectively. While many of these injuries are trivial, with no lasting adverse effects, others, notably those involving strong alkalis and to a less extent acids and other noxious substances, are potentially blinding. This study was prompted by a recent rise in the incidence of chemical trauma due to assault seen at Croydon Eye Unit, and set out to determine what substances are involved, which people are at risk, and the frequency of assault cases.

Chemical burns of the eye: causes and management.
For the 14 months 1 January 1985 to 28 February 1986 all cases of chemical eye injury presenting to the Croydon Eye Unit were analysed. Of the 180 cases 19 were caused by assaults and 14 were admitted for treatment. The wide range of injurious substances is emphasised, and the circumstances of injury are listed. A discussion of the management of chemical eye injury is included.
متن کاملTitanium tetrachloride burns to the eye.
We present eight cases of chemical burns of the eyes from titanium tetrachloride, an acidic corrosive liquid. However it causes severe chemical burns which have a protracted course and features more akin to severe alkali burns. Injuries related to titanium tetrachloride should be treated seriously and accordingly appropriate management is suggested.

The use of high-resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT) to visualize penetration kinetics during the initial phase of chemical eye burns is evaluated. The changes in scattering properties and thickness of rabbit cornea ex vivo were monitored after topical application of different corrosives by time-resolved OCT imaging. Eye burn causes changes in the corneal microstructure due to chemical...
